Alas, poor computer!
Jan. 4th, 2009 04:15 pmSo, I've been more than MIA lately, I've been nigh non-existent internet-wise. Since about Thanksgiving my computer has been slower than treacle, having difficulty starting up and then actually running when it finally got to the desktop. Because of a HENIOUS virus called antivirus trigger/antivirus 2009 that got past my computer's FREQUENTLY AND OBSESSIVELY updated antivirus, I was unable to restore my computer, to update my antivirus, OR to even access my files really, because it would only cause my computer to freeze! And this WHORE of a virus/spyware turned OFF my windows firewalls and my antivirus, and blocked me from turning them on again! AND, over the course of the month, it's only gotten worse.
Today I decided to kill my computer prematurely. What it would have cost me to have computer saavy sorts fix it, never mind what it has cost me in grief, is much greater than it would cost me to just buy and new damn laptop. So, thanks to you, wastebasket consumerism, it's cheaper to give up the ghost, backup my shit, buy a cheap ass new laptop, and start anew.
Part one of my New Deal is in affect. My shit is backed up, and now just needs somewhere new to go. Any suggestions, f-list?
....and DON'T say Mac. Even though I would totally be spiritually ready to jump the PC ship right now, my sincere lack of money makes that incredibly foolish. Just need something I can write on, and keep my music and pictures on, and have wireless internet on. So, goodish memory, lotta room, and something that isn't going to die in two years.
And really, internet, is that REALLY too much to ask for?

Off to write Lucifer Box fanfic. Frot with Peril is the working title. That was Han's idea.

Date: 2009-01-05 02:05 am (UTC)It happened to me, and it was such a bitch. First time it happened, I booted in safe mode, manually restored all the services (you have to actually make registry changes through the editor or through services.msc), ran a fuckload of rootkit removal programs and malware fixers, then booted back up normally, cut off interwebs, and did virus scanning. I looked for all instances of a potential virus, and killed it, and scorched it from my harddrive. Second time it happened, I already had back-ups, so I just blew away Win XP and reinstalled.
