[livejournal.com profile] alder_knight gave a totally kick-ass picture prompt.

She had no intention of allowing people to call her crazy JUST because she talked to her flying contraption as if it were a real dragon. As far as Maria was concerned, it WAS real. It flew, its' wings of metal and thick oiled paper snapping through the air with every downward flap. Its workings tended to have a mind of their own and at the most unfortunate times, but it still kept her safe, kept her firm in her saddle and harness, got her home, kept her in the sky, as if it could read the deepest needs of her heart. And once on a dare and a half bottle of her abuelos' best home brew, she'd even made it breath fire.

No, Libélula was real. But Maria was prepared to humbly accept that she was crazy for what she was about to do.

The drone of the double motor scout planes was getting louder, gaining on her as Libélula thrashed and bucked under her, straining to fly faster as she frenetically worked the controls.

Before her as the crow flies rose and twisted La Cicatriz—the twisted, unnaturally incredible scar of sheer mountains and deep gorges. No pilot with a wish to see tomorrow flew through La Cicatriz--within it's walls of stone were winds that could bat a plane into the mountain's side like a cat's paw could bat a fly, air pockets that would make a plane drop like a stone down a well, and fog that could make the ground and sky and horizon one.

She tightened her harness with one hand, and hunched forward, trying to make herself as streamline as she could manage. It make working the controls more difficult, but if it got her to La Cicatriz before the scouts were in range—

'Rápido'--the word repeated like a prayer in her head—'Rápido más rápido rápido rápido—'

XD Glad you enjoyed it! It was a bit of fun to write...between margaritas...

Um, my Spanish is what I gleaned from the dictionary, but abuelos=grandparents, libélula=dragonfly, la cicatriz=the scar, and mas rapido=faster. And there you go! ^_^

Well, whatever it all means, it was an awesome piece. And an awesome prompt! At first glance, I thought it was an Andrew Lang print. Then I saw the goggles. :B

Yes, one of the great tragedies of life, that Andrew Yang never got around to prints of girls in goggles. ^_^
