Use Your Big Girl Words!: Or, Nanowrimo
Oct. 13th, 2009 10:17 pmSo, it may take a village to raise a child, but I'd also like to think it takes a few kind souls to prod an would-be author into finishing something.
NANOWRIMO FAST APPROACHES!--and methinks this year, I will make a Nano writing filter for my lj. SHOCKING I KNOW. But I am declaring my intention, because I want to know if anyone wants on said filter, either because you're nano-ing as well, or you just want to see what it is my wicked and slightly-used-and-worn-around-the-edges-but-still-serviceable brain can come up with on a little sleep and lots of caffeine.
So, comment if you want on the Nano filter, and are ok with putting up with my nano-nonsense. AND DON'T WORRY--I'm not going to be insulted if you don't want on it. SERIOUSLY. But I won't put you on it unless you're ok with me spamming your f-list with (...hopefully) daily posts.
In other news, I spent this evening making my nano binder. I found that I'm most successful with Nano when I get creative. Or, just surround myself with things that keep my brain interested in the tale I'm concocting. in 2005, it was drawings I came up with for my tale. In 2007, it was the drawings, AND a themed binder and soundtrack. So, as I don't fix things that ain't broke, I've been doodling, and my binder it ready to be filled to the brim with my 2009 Novel!

BUT...I do ask a boon from all of you on my f-list. You see, I need a writing soundtrack. Badly. I've only got about 4 songs on it so far: two version of "March of the Wooden Soldiers", a march for Company B from my workplace (dated 1880ish), and some songs from La Vita E Bella.
If you'd be SO kind...
If you have anything that feels/screams/suggests a fairy!tale!Ozian! young adult adventure comedy with thrills, chills, orphans, wooden soldiers, bogeys, krumpus, dark woods, deep caves, tricks, lies, job loss, house foreclosure, families-what-are-constructed-not-born, crooked men, silly kings, brother/sister biffles, toymakers, town-shakers, candlestick-makers, would-be murderers and near misses, boys-who-can-not-shudder, sensible girls with sheep, balls of string, well-made tools, china-doll girls and puppet boys, reluctant generals, a dash of romance, a helping of absurdity and a couple of Tweedles!--
...Oddly enough, Scott Joplin works a little too well for all the above.
But if would be so kind as to share what songs you have with me--well, I have nothing to give but gratitude, but REST ASSURED I have gratitude in SPADES. SPADES I TELL YOU.

Date: 2009-10-14 03:19 am (UTC)Something comes to mind that I JUST found is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8M8rZ3BAYc&NR=1
Just listen to how it creeps. And this one has a really awesome, melencholic pulse to it, which could definitely be 'deep cave', 'dark woods' maybe.

Hope they help!

Date: 2009-10-14 05:23 am (UTC)Please tell me which work for you and which don't. For several of these artists, I have multiple songs that fit the theme if you want more from them.
Other people, feel free to try these fine songs too.

Date: 2009-10-15 04:40 am (UTC)Oh, you mean musically speaking, rather than lyrics.
Right, so! Would you be wanting more from any of these musicians? Because I can provide a few more relevant tracks!

Date: 2009-10-15 04:51 am (UTC)I seem to have the most muse-fortune with Steeleye Span, Tempest, Heather Alexander and Fleet Foxes. So...yes, if you are willing and able, I will gladly take!

Date: 2009-10-14 05:28 am (UTC)I can't think of anything but Coin Operated Boy and maybe the aria that Danny Elfman wrote for his symphony, Serenada Schizophrana.
H'm... what about the music from Chitty Chitty Bang Bnag, Babes in Toyland, Dr Dolittle, The Wiz, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Also the Nutcracker bits with Heir Drosselmeier (seriously love that guy. I should write ficlets with him in them). I'm trying to think of composers that use toy pianos and things, and all I can think of is Rugrats music and some of Danny Elfman's stuff (maybe from Freeway? There's a lot of 'lalala'ing in that). Oh, and Amanda Palmer, but she's too... raw and angry, I think.
Oh! What about actual kids music, like some of Barenaked Ladies' stuff and suchlike?
...Disney?

Date: 2009-10-14 02:03 pm (UTC)I was thinking of adding some songs from Song White, some of those have the right feel. I wish I could use Sleeping Beauty, but I used that one for another story I was working on with a knight and a fairy godmother and...oye, it just doesn't inspire anything but that story now ^_^;;
Hrum, maybe some Elfman might work. Oh! And yea, I'll try to hunt down bits from the Nutcracker, good call!

Date: 2009-10-14 02:06 pm (UTC)Problem with steampunk like music is that is makes me think of the steampunk story I worked on for Nano LAST year ^_^;;;. But I'll give them a listen, maybe one or two will fit!
And unemployment's a GREAT time for nano. (yes, I HAVE been there, done that << >> <<)
DOOOOOOOO EEEEEEEEEEEIT. And then come with me to the NY meet up/write ins.

Date: 2009-10-14 03:20 pm (UTC)Also, I intend on going to the NYC Nano write-in meet ups this year, so it should be double to the fun ^_^. But that's the great thing about nano--even if there isn't meet up group near you, or you just don't have the time, you can get a little writing group going online! For example, a friend of mine runs slanowrimo, a dreamwidth (previously livejournal) community for slash-friendly nanoers. And the best years for me were the ones where my flist was a flurry of nano activity. Nothing quite like a group effort to keep you going.
But yea, muse on it a bit! See what you can't come up with! And if you do end up nanoing, keep me posted on your progress!
(Also, thanks for the music!)

Date: 2009-10-14 03:35 pm (UTC)....So, really, short of the long is that whenever I listen to Abney Park now, I think of that story instead. ^_^;;; So, I'm looking for stuff that feels more like a Grimm tale, or German, or child-like repetitive, than steampunky. But like I said, Joplin works SHOCKINGLY well as well, so I'm glad for a surprise!
I'll be posting my daily output, so we'll see if the tale itself lives up to the description. ;)

Date: 2009-10-14 01:21 pm (UTC)What the hell is a nano filter?
Also for writing I would recommend pictures an an exhibition by Mussorgsky (I like piano more than symphony) also Pier Gynt Edvard Grieg, Romeo and Juliette by Prokofiev is also very good.

Date: 2009-10-14 11:55 pm (UTC)Someone upthread mentioned the Series of Unfortunate Events soundtrack...If you like music of that bent, and if you like Lemony Snicket, you should check out "The Composer is Dead." It's basically a short murder mystery set to fun, orchestral music, with styles ranging from waltz to techno. SO awesome.
